Siblings Surprise Bishop to Celebrate His 10th Episcopal Anniversary
TULSA — On Sunday evening Bishop David A. Konderla celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving at Holy Family Cathedral to mark his 10th Episcopal Anniversary in the Diocese of Tulsa and Eastern Oklahoma.
"I want to begin by thanking everyone for all the prayers and the well wishes as I have been celebrating this 10th anniversary, and for coming," Bishop Konderla told those in attendance prior to beginning his homily." It’s good to see you at the Mass, especially the clergy who have come after the busyness of a Sunday and who have made the effort to come and be with us. I appreciate that very much."
The night before, the Bishop was surprised by most of his siblings as they all gathered in Tulsa, unbeknownst to him, to celebrate with a private dinner at a Tulsa home.
"Yesterday, all but one of my siblings — I have 11 siblings — were here in town," said Bishop Konderla. "With the collusion of some of my staff members, they created a surprise party. They lured me to a nondescript home over in the area of the hospital, where they were all waiting. I was there for an entirely different reason. And when the front door opened, instead of the family whose home I thought I was coming to, it was my own family screaming at me. I felt very at home. We did have a great time."
After Saturday night's reunion with brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, several Konderla family members remained in town to attend the Sunday evening Mass. Following the Mass, a public reception was held in the Heiring Auditorium.
Bishop Konderla was appointed the fourth Bishop of Tulsa on May 13, 2016, by Pope Francis and was ordained and installed as Bishop of the Diocese of Tulsa on June 29, 2016, in a ceremony at the University of Tulsa's Reynolds Center.
