A Family Affair: Father Matthew McClain Ordained to the Priesthood
TULSA — Father Stephen Matthew McClain was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood of Jesus Christ at Mass celebrated by His Excellency Most Rev. David A. Konderla, Bishop of the Diocese of Tulsa and Eastern Oklahoma, on Friday evening at Holy Family Cathedral.
"Most Reverend Father, Holy Mother Church asks you to ordain this man, our brother, to the responsibility of the priesthood," announced Very Rev. Fr. Duy Nguyen, Director of Vocations for the Diocese.
"Father Duy, do you know him to be worthy?" replied Bishop Konderla.
"After inquiry among the Christian people and upon the recommendation of those concerned with his formation I testify that he has been found worthy," responded Fr. Duy.
"Relying on the help of the Lord God and of our Savior Jesus Christ we choose this our brother for the Order of the Priesthood," proclaimed Bishop Konderla. At that moment Rev. McClain turned to face a host of family members, friends and will wishers in attendance and accepted their warm applause.
Beginning his homily, Bishop Konderla joked, "Your uncle will be very happy that we called you Stephen."
Father McClain, who goes by Matthew, is the nephew of recently retired priest Father Stephen Austin. His aunt, Sister Barbara Austin, O.S.B., is a Benedictine Sister at St. Joseph Monastery in Tulsa. Several other extended family members were in attendance Friday evening.
"My uncle, Father Steve Austin, was a priest, and he was also my godfather. So, ever since I was a little kid and being an altar server I always kind of thought about the priesthood," said Fr. McClain in a previously recorded
video interview for
Eastern Oklahoma Catholic.
"On behalf of the Diocese I want to thank Matthew's family and friends and all those who have played a role in the development of his faith life and in his priestly formation," said Bishop Konderla continuing his remarks. "You give him to us as a gift, and we thank you for his vocation. In a special way, I want to welcome the brother priests who are here in a tangible sign of the fraternity that you joined today. In his providence, God has brought us together from many different places to serve the people of God in this local Church. And with our prayers and our fraternal presence and concern, we support each other, and now we support you, Matthew."
Father McClain celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving, his first as a priest of the Diocese, at his home parish, St. John Before the Latin Gate in Bartlesville, on Saturday morning.
Father McClain graduated Dec. 5, 2025, from the St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology in Indiana with a Master of Divinity degree and was ordained a Deacon on Dec. 19, 2025. Since that time, he has served as a transitional deacon alongside Rev. Sean O'Brien at Immaculate Conception in Poteau, St. Joseph in Stigler, and St. Elizabeth in Spiro. Following his priestly ordination. Effective July 1, Rev. McClain will serve as parochial vicar for the parish cluster which will now also include Sacred Heart Mission in Heavener.
